Sadly not the first time this has happened to the MD-11, same wing too IIRC

Those poor pilots never had a chance, that couldn’t have broke at a worse time

Has this video been released anywhere? I can’t seem to find it.

Seeing this right before I’m about to take off for a flight…

In the later pictures, the angle of attack seems to be getting excessive. Could this have caused a stall?

Well past the point of no return too. Poor bastards.

Is this about the 4th November crash ? UPS Airlines 2976 ?
Fourteen dead, the three crew and 11 people caught on the ground…

I am surprised the plane continued straight up and came down rather than rolling to the left. They lost a huge amount of lift from the left wing while the right wing continued upward. Frame 5 looks like there is a roll starting already.
Where did the engine go? I see in pic 4 it looks like it’s gonna hit the plane but in pic 5 it looks like pic 4 without the engine anywhere to be seen.

Minister, is it normal for the engine to fall off?
awake_receiver on
Well usually the front doesn’t fall off

What exactly are we seeing in picture 6? Is that the loose engine hitting the middle engine?
Would the takeoff have been succesfull (with a chance to land again) if that middle engine didn’t fail?

Incredible and horrific. The engine breaks loose, ignites the fuel and rockets up and over the plane landing in the grass beside the runway way. There are man reports that the center-rear engine suffered a compressor stall so the plane had insufficient power to climb much more than their momentum would carry them. I won’t be surprised if the final report says hydraulic controls were compromised. I’m sure the FAA is looking closely at maintenance procedures.
The crew didn’t have a chance to avoid the crash. My condolences to their families and the families of those killed on the ground.

Damn, didn’t this EXACT same thing happen to American 191 in 1979?
Even upgraded, the DC10 is never going to shed its reputation.

what are this images, where are they from, please provide more context

I can’t even imagine how frightening that must’ve been for them.

could having the engine that spins the other way have helped this? it looks like engine twisted inwards, might be from gyroscopic forces, and caused more damage.

I’m gonna go with subpar preflight inspection, no way they did it properly.

Over the top of the wing. That’s crazy.
Damn
How do you accidentally engineer a plane to kick itself in its own ass?

These photos come from the NTSB preliminary report. Here is the link if you want to deepen: https://www.ntsb.gov/Documents/Prelimiary%20Report%20DCA26MA024.pdf
Anybody else think about AA FL 191 when they see this? That was a DC-10, but eerily similar. It was the left engine on both aircraft too.
They had no chance. Fuck.
The engine detaching and flying over the wing is the same scenario as Flight 191 in Chicago in 1979 where this famous photo was snapped.

That’ll do it
captain, the left is running better than the right one. look. its overtaking us already!
Those poor bastards I don’t even think they knew
Gosh that’s terrifying, imagine looking out the window on take off as that happens?
Poor people.
American Airlines Flight 191 went the same way?
